A First Look, To Do or Not?

real-wedding , March 29, 2016

It’s something I ask each and every one of my wedding clients, pretty early on in our relationship. During a phone call (or in person if it’s an option) and I get to hear a little bit of your story, talk about the vendors and discuss how the planning is (or isn’t) coming along. Then, I ask: “Have you thought about doing a first look?”  (It surprises me with how many brides have already made up their mind by the time they are talking to their photographer.) If they are doing to do one, the biggest reason for doing so is because they believe the day will go by more smoothly (and in some ways, it usually does). The number one reason is that brides don’t want their groom to see them before they walk down the aisle is for the sake of tradition, believing the drama will be all the better and his reaction that much sweeter.

Well ladies, I have some news for you. In the dozens and dozens of weddings that I’ve photographed, only two times  have I seen a groom have an emotional reaction to seeing his bride come down the aisle. Usually, the guys are standing to attention, putting on a brave face with clenched hands and a locked jaw, doing their best to hold it together. Fair enough. Hundreds of eyes are on the them, they are probably a little uncomfortable in their suit, slightly sweaty, and full of nerves. If they gave the reaction they wanted to, they’d probably fall apart.

To put it simply, if you want a reaction out of your man, on your wedding, in your gorgeous gown, DO A FIRST LOOK!

An added bonus of doing one: you’ll be able to spend more time together on your wedding day. It’s a day that flies by and the person you spend the least amount of time with is the one you’re promising to spend the rest of your life with. By opting to see each other before the ceremony, not only will you have less to worry about after the ceremony, more time together, but time for hubby-to-be to adore you in your dress, and it may even lead to a few tears in his eyes ….and, who doesn’t want that?! (:

PS. So, you can see all of my different logos on this post (whoa!). BUT, over the last few months I’ve been working with a designer and while we’ve got a ways to go, what is in the work is epic, absolutely gorgeous, and completely inspiring. I cannot wait to show you!
